Looking for work? Have you ever thought about

Work-based training gives you the opportunity to gain a
qualification whilst working and offers training “on the
job". A Training Provider will arrange for you to attend
day or block release training. Often you will need to find
your own employer (i.e. get a job). Training Providers may be
able to help you with this. In October 2010 a
new Apprentice national minimum wage was
introduced. See
this page for further details.
You are trained to achieve an NVQ (National
Vocational Qualification) that is designed to assess competence in
the workplace.
- Level 1 is equivalent to GCSEs at grade D-G
- Level 2 is equivalent to GCSEs at grade C or above
- Level 3 is equivalent to 2 A Levels
This Ofqal website gives more information
on qualifications and their various levels
Sometimes NVQs are offered as full-time
courses if there is sufficient experience of a working environment
built into the course e.g. the college has its own hairdressing
salon.
Whilst taking an Apprenticeship,
you work towards a Technical Certificate (technical
skills needed on the job), Key Skills in Communications (English)
and Application of Number (Maths) and the NVQ qualification
itself.

the Apprenticeships.org website. This

Levels
1 - Intermediate Apprenticeships
- Apprentices work towards a Technical
Certificate giving a theoretical understanding of the
occupational area and Key Skills in Communications (English)
and Application of Number (Maths). An NVQ Level 2 will be
taken to assess competence in the workplace. To achieve an
Intermediate apprenticeship will normally take 12-18
months. The entry requirements vary depending on the
Apprenticeship, though GCSEs at grade D or above will be
useful.
2 - Advanced Apprenticeships
- Apprentices work towards an NVQ Level 3 and will continue
with Key Skills. Those who take this level of qualification
may hold or be applying for a supervisory role in the
workplace. To start this programme, the applicant should
ideally have five GCSEs (grade C or above) or have completed an
Intermediate Apprenticeship.
3 - Higher Apprenticeships
- Apprentices work towards an NVQ Level 4 and, in some
cases, a Foundation degree. Entry requirements are usually an
Advanced Apprenticeship or a Level 3 qualification such as A
Levels. This could lead to progression to higher
education, including university degrees.
