Are you thinking of part-time or seasonal work?
Many young people look for part-time and seasonal work.
Occasionally there may be vacancies of this kind in
our weekly vacancy
bulletin. Seasonal work is only on a
temporary basis to help out employers who need extra staff to
cope with particularly busy periods, such as at Christmas or
picking fruit in the summer. You may find some jobs, such
as delivering newspapers or working in a shop at weekends, may
only be advertised in shop windows. Alternatively, the
positions may be filled by employers asking those people they
know personally who may need work (this is known as "word of
mouth").
The official school leaving date is always the last Friday in
June of the academic year in which a child will become 16. Children
cannot officially leave school until that date and cannot take full
time employment until after the official leaving
date. If you are under the official school leaving age
you need to be aware of laws about the hours that children in
compulsory education can work, and the sort of work that they can
do. It is illegal for children to work without a permit from their
local authority.
