A brief overview of where to look for jobs
Connexions Youth Access Point
in the central library – to look for vacancies &
apprenticeships. A Vacancy Bulletin is produced every week.
Your school/college gets a copy and others are distributed to
libraries and youth/community centres. The Vacancy Bulletin
is also available on-line.
School or college –
Connexions and some local employers send vacancies into schools and
colleges. Check out notice boards for details.
Local newspapers and their
websites – advertise vacancies for people of all ages.
Sometimes they will advertise vacancies for school leavers before
Christmas. See jobstoday.co.uk
Apprenticeships Online - this
site helps you find and apply for apprenticeships online!
apprenticeships.org.uk
Friends and relatives –
sometimes know about vacancies where they work.
Internet – many employers now
post their vacancies on the internet.
JobcentrePlus – mainly
has vacancies for over 18s, but sometimes they do advertise
vacancies for younger people. See the
direct.gov website.
Recruitment fairs –
occasionally there are fairs aimed at young people.
Recruitment agencies -- look
in Yellow Pages or go on-line to look for local agencies that
specialise in the work you are interested in e.g. temporary work in
offices.
Jobs in the NHS -- there is a
dedicated website for these vacancies at jobs.nhs
National websites – the
majority of vacancies will be asking for people with experience but
it is still worth a look even if just to see what prospects there
are in a particular career area.

SPECULATIVE APPLICATIONS
This is where you write to employers who have
not advertised vacancies but you hope might consider you for future
jobs. If there are employers you really want to work
for it might be worth sending them a letter expressing your
interest and a copy of your C.V.
