Funding for Higher Education

aimhigherd

If you are considering going into higher education you need to think about the cost and be aware of the support available.

You will need to pay for your tuition fees, accommodation and living costs.  You are strongly advised to look at the direct.gov website to find out all the latest facts and figures.

Tuition fees

Universities in England charge students tuition fees for their courses.  The amount charged varies between courses and different universities.

Student loans

You can take out a student loan to cover tuition fees, and you only start repayment once you have finished studying and are earning more than a certain threshold.  The interest rate is linked to the rate of inflation so you repay the same, in real terms, as what you have borrowed.  There are two different types of Student Loan - one is designed to pay for tuition fees and the other to help towards day-to-day living costs such as rent and travel. Loans for tuition fees are not income-assessed: loans for living costs are.  Students due to pay back their Loans from April 2012 will have the option of taking a repayment break of up to five years.

Maintenance grants

The non-repayable Maintenance Grant depends on your parents or guardians household income.  You may get a full or partial grant.

Non-Repayable Bursaries.

Many universities offer non-repayable bursaries that vary from institution to institution.

Visit the  bursary map to search for bursary offers.

NHS Bursaries

These are for courses that qualify you to become professionals in the NHS.  Examples are doctor, dentist, nurse, midwife, chiropodist, dietician, occupational therapist, orthoptist, physiotherapist, prosthetist, orthotist, radiographer, audiologist, and speech therapist.  See www.nhsstudentgrants.co.uk for more information.

Social Work

There is a bursary scheme for those studying degree or diploma courses in social work. See this nhs site for more details.

Sponsorships

These are very competitive and more likely to be available to those undertaking engineering, construction, business and I.T. courses. The Armed Forces also offer sponsorships.  Visit this sponsorship site for more details.
