Major development

Peterborough is gearing up for rapid expansion.  We are working to make sure that the city grows the right way and consultations have been or will be carried out with the public on many of the projects.

Major schemes that may affect the whole City include North Westgate, South Bank, Station Quarter, the redevelopment of the Peterborough District Hospital site and urban extensions such as Paston Reserve, Great Haddon and South Stanground. Opportunity Peterborough is our city's urban regeneration company and is working closely with us on some of these projects.

Design review panel

The importance of high quality urban and architectural design in creating attractive and successful places has been recognised in Peterborough by the formal setting up of a Design Review Panel in June 2009. The function of the Panel is to review significant and important development projects as they emerge and to provide independent, expert, advice to developers, officers and Members.

Early in the planning of a new building or a modification of one in a sensitive location, applicants will be encouraged to submit their schemes for a peer review. This will be carried out by a select panel of architects, designers, engineers and people with passion to achieve good design appropriately located in the City. The Panel will convene periodically throughout the year and consider schemes with developers and their advisers, making an independent report which will be available to the Planning Service in making its own report and to the Planning Committee which of course will be free to make its own decisions.

The Panel is made up of a wide variety of different professions active in the built environment with a reputation for excellent design. The Chair of the Panel is John Lyall Managing Director of John Lyall Architects. The practice has gained a reputation for successful urban regeneration schemes in Leeds, Cardiff Bay, Norwich and Ipswich. Such mixed-use schemes have generated expertise in housing, retail and cultural projects. John established his reputation as an innovative young architect in the 1980's with a number of landmark projects at home and abroad. John trained at the Architectural Association; for most of his professional career he has combined running an award-winning practice with contributions to the education of architects by teaching and examining all over the world. Working for Cedric Price, and for Piano and Rogers lead to his forming the firm of Alsop and Lyall, from which John Lyall Architects was created in 1991. John Lyall is a registered Client Design Adviser and also serves on CABE's national Design Review Panel.

Peterborough District Hospital

Peterborough City Council has been working towards the preparation of a site planning brief which proposes appropriate regeneration opportunities for the Peterborough District Hospital Site.

Consultation has been delayed due to ongoing discussion between the Council and the landowner and residents will be notified in due course as to when the consultation will commence
