Step 2 - prepare plans, drawings and other documents

You will need to prepare plans and drawings. You can do this yourself or employ a professional planning agent or architect to do it for you. Details of agents can be found in the Yellow Pages under planning consultants. You can also get details of registered architects from the Royal Institute of British Architects.

If you require Ordnance Survey Site Location Plans for a planning application contact Plan Printing. Alternatively, if you apply on-line using the Planning Portal you will be able to purchase Ordnance Survey site plans from them.

Sample drawings and plans

Planning processSample plans are provided below to help you assemble the appropriate level of information when you make an application. These plans are intended as examples only. All rights are reserved.

We will not normally accept partial plans as it is almost always necessary for us to be able to assess the proposal in the context of the building or site as a whole. Plans which show only partial elevations or floor areas also make it difficult for other interested parties e.g. neighbours and consultees to assess what is being proposed.

The document(s) below appear in Adobe® Acrobat® (PDF) format. In order to view a document you will need to have Acrobat Reader installed. (Those with visual impairments may wish to investigate Access Adobe, which provides tools and information to help make PDF files more accessible).

The Planning Portal have also created a 'What to submit' best practice guide to the types of plans required with planning applications, and how to mark them correctly.

Part of this advice includes the following:

When using Ordnance Survey mapping for planning applications, the map should:

  • Not be a Land Registry document
  • Not be used for multiple applications
  • Show OS Crown copyright as an acknowledgement
  • Not be a photocopy or screen grab image
  • Not to be copied from existing OS mapping, if using hand drawn maps such as standard streets
  • Show the correct licence number if you wish to print or copy maps for applications
