What happens to your garden waste

All of the garden waste you put in your brown bin is composted into an organic peat-free soil improver.

Brown wheelie binThe garden waste collected by this service is composted into soil improver, instead of being sent to landfill. Biodegradable garden waste buried at landfill sites rots without oxygen producing large amounts of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, that contributes to climate change.

The garden waste you put in your brown bin for collection is taken to the composting facilities at Dogsthorpe where it is bulked up and then taken to the Organic Recycling Ltd compost site at Crowland.

Here the material is shredded and formed into large rows called 'windrows' for composting .  The windrows are turned regularly to ensure an even mixture, to provide aeration and to control temperature and moisture.  This ensures the material is in its optimum state to compost. This process takes around 12-16 weeks.

Once the process is complete, the composted waste is bagged up and sold as a 100% recycled soil conditioner/compost (alternative to peat based products) which can be purchased at the Householders Recycling Centre at Dogsthorpe and Helpston Garden Centre.
