Community Spend Seeks Approval At Neighbourhood Committee

14 December 2011

Community grants totalling £25,000 are set to be allocated at a meeting on Thursday 15 December 2011.

The grants will be awarded at the Rural North Neighbourhood Committee meeting at Northborough Village Hall, Northborough, Peterborough, at 7pm.

Each of the five wards in the Rural North Neighbourhood Committee area has been given £5,000 to spend on community projects.

Residents of the five wards are being invited to the meeting to find out how the money will be spent.

Eye and Thorney Ward has bid for a £2,500 contribution towards improving the pavement, grass verge and steps outside the village shop. The total cost of the project is £7,500 and Thorney Parish Council has secured the remainder of the money required.

Northborough Ward has asked for £1,500 towards the creation of a disabled parking bay at Maxey Village Hall. The money will also pay for the installation of handrails and signage. Additional funding required will be met by the village's community association.

Glinton and Wittering Ward wants £3,500 for the purchase of new street name plates and £1,500 for speed awareness signs to be placed on refuse bins.

Newborough Ward has applied for £2,500 to pay for improvement works at Peakirk Village Hall. The works will help to ensure the hall is compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act. The ward also wants £2,500 towards structural works to the village’s community sports pavilion.

Barnack Ward will be seeking a £900 contribution towards IT and activity equipment for young people in Wothorpe.  Ufford Parish Council is hoping to buy a community notice board and community safety equipment for the village with the £900 they have requested. The ward has also requested £2,300 towards fencing and equipment for an environmental project led by the Langdyke Countryside Trust.

The meeting will also be a chance for people to find out more about the city council's planned improvements of street lighting and bridges in the area.

Residents will be invited to raise issues affecting their area and suggest agenda items for the next neighbourhood committee.

Julie Rivett, Peterborough City Council's Neighbourhood Manager for North and West, said: "This particular meeting will confirm the money allocated for improving communities and making a positive difference to where people live. Residents have made a considerable input into the plans and it is proof of how they are able to play a big part in future decisions that affect them.

"We will also be addressing issues and concerns residents highlighted at our last meeting and there will be a presentation, followed by a discussion, on how people can contribute to existing voluntary sector work in the area."

The neighbourhood committee includes a ‘ward forum’ in which people can talk to their local councillors about specific issues and concerns they may have prior to the neighbourhood committee meeting taking place.

Ends.
