Operation CAN-do
Operation CAN-do is multi-agency 10-year programme created to
improve the quality of life and outcomes of people living and
working in the Gladstone, Millfield and New England communities of
Peterborough.
Partners and our communities are committed to doing something
transformational and different for this area, which will celebrate
its uniqueness and convert it to being a place of positive
vibrancy.
Organisations are working together on one focused agenda that
will:
- Create jobs and improve skills and education
- Support vulnerable families and tackle causes of poverty
- Safeguard adults and children and help them to live healthy and
longer
- Reduce energy consumption
- Reduce crime and tackle anti-social behaviour
There are numerous areas of concern that are already being
tackled but there is still a long way to go to address fundamental
issues in the area including:
- High levels of deprivation
- Dense population with approximately 46 people per hectare of
land
- Three primary schools with 22 different languages spoken
- Only 382m² of green space
- High numbers of children living in poverty
- Households classed as being in fuel poverty
- High levels of domestic abuse incidents
- Higher numbers of rubbish accumulations than in other city
areas
- Low life expectancy for females (77 years) compared to other
city areas

UPDATE: 5 March 2013 A Government minister has
praised Peterborough for helping victims of domestic violence get
justice.
See full press release and video here.
UPDATE: 12 February 2013 There has been a
spate of fires being set in wheelie bins, discarded furniture and
some vehicles, across the city. We have teamed up with other
agencies, including the fire service to tackle this problem. You
can help to prevent these types of offences, by ensuring that
wheelie bins are not left in the street after collection, or if
they are full, kept in a safe place until they can be emptied.
Report any discarded furniture to the local authority so they can
make arrangements to collect it. We are also working with youths
both in and out of schools to educate them about the dangers of
setting fires and asking them to be vigilant when out and about.
Please report any suspicious activity around fires to the Police on
101.
