Making Peterborough Safe
The following themes and projects have been completed with the
aim of making our city a safer place to live in, work in and
visit.
Training
Regular training for door staff in pubs and clubs covered:
- Search training and weapon awareness
- Defensive stance
- Restraints and takedowns
- Pressure point application
- Limb restraint awareness
- Spit hood awareness
- Tuff tie / handcuff awareness
- Joint licensing training for city council and police licensing
teams
Campaigns
- The launch of Facebook page -
Safeabouttown Peterborough - is aimed at young
people. Parents are also encouraged to become a ‘friend of the
site’ so they can be aware of the advice to reinforce key
messages
- Safer Schools officers talking to year 9 and 10 pupils about
violent crime and knife crime
- Marketing material designed for proxy sale campaigns to
highlight the gravity of buying alcohol for underage people
- Temporary closure of New Road (city centre) to make the main
area for night-time revellers much safer. Personal safety messages
via a range or media encouraged pubs and clubs to promote free
drinking water and promoted the ICE (in case of emergency ) scheme. Emergency
services always look on a mobile phone under ICE for next of kin
details if they find someone who is unable to talk to them if
unconscious or unable to communicate
- The city council licensing team and police have continued test
purchasing operations in off-licenses, pubs and clubs. Young
volunteers are sent into licensed premises to buy alcohol. The
number of sales has dropped dramatically. In 2007 we reached 28% of
sales. In 2009 this was reduced to 17%.
