Peterborough Neighbourhood Champions logoPeterborough Neighbourhood Champions are local people who want to improve their local communities by:

  • Reducing crime, anti-social behaviour and hate crime
  • Reducing the fear of crime
  • Empowering people and communities to make a difference
  • Campaigning for change

We will do this by:

  • Working closely with other organisations – both statutory and voluntary
  • Taking time to listen to local people
  • Providing information to guide people to the right service or organisation
  • Helping people to resolve local issues
  • Advocating on behalf of the community

Examples of what we might get involved with:
Anti-social behaviour for example -

  • Environmental issues such as graffiti or fly-tipping
  • Neighbour issues
  • Problems at local amenities e.g. parks or shopping parades
  • Support and encourage people to take action

The organisation is run:
 -  By a formally constituted management committee

 -  With a full range of policies that all members agree to. These include:

  • Code of conduct
  • Equal opportunities policy
  • Grievance procedure
  • Disciplinary procedure
  • Children and vulnerable adults policy

How do I become a member of Peterborough Neighbourhood Champions?

All members go through a recruitment process which includes:

  • Application form
  • Two references
  • Confidential declaration form
  • Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check

Before members begin to work in local communities they undergo an extensive training course that includes:

  • Introduction to anti-social behaviour
  • Listening skills
  • Safeguarding
  • Personal safety
  • Domestic abuse
  • Hate crime
  • Substance misuse

We ensure a quality service by:

  • All members working within a code of conduct
  • Working in pairs to ensure a consistent approach
  • Providing everyone who contacts us with a confidential customer satisfaction survey
  • Having a full grievance and disciplinary procedure
  • Continually monitoring our performance

Out of Court Punishments LATEST: December 2011: A 29 year-old male made threats to punch another in a pub and was racially abusive to him. He was charged with racially aggravated common assault and racially aggravated Intentional Harassment. He received a 12 month suspended imprisonment sentence, a curfew for eight weeks and 150 hours unpaid work. Condition: He was fined £85 costs and made to pay £100 in compensation.
