The Council operates a service to investigate alleged abandoned vehicles and, if appropriate, to arrange for their removal and disposal.
This process is carried out under the authority of the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978. We would normally expect a vehicle to have been in situ for a number of weeks before being reported as abandoned. Alternatively if the vehicle is in a bad state of repair and/or attracting anti-social behaviour this should be reported as soon as possible. Upon receipt of a report an Officer will attend to assess the vehicle according to specific criteria before serving a notice by sticking it to the windscreen, if appropriate.
Upon expiration of that notice a vehicle is deemed to have been abandoned. The Councils Contractor will attend to remove the vehicle and store it. There is a fee for the return of the vehicle and daily rate storage charges. If the vehicle is not claimed a Fixed Penalty Notice of £200 is issued to the Registered Keeper and the vehicle is disposed of.
