Adoption & Fostering

Service Overview  The Adoption and Fostering Unit recruits, trains and supports adopters and foster carers.

Approved foster carers provide accommodation for children of specified ages and gender.  The numbers they care for are usually agreed in advance, as is the length of time a child or young person can remain with them.  Carers are also specifically recruited to provide temporary care, such as in an emergency, for respite or planned pieces of work to be done, or to provide a permanent home to a specific child or young person.  Allowances are always paid to foster carers, together with a skills based reward element that is based upon demonstrated skills, previous experience and training undertaken.

Adoption is another way that permanent homes are offered, but in this case, the child’s future is secured through a specific legal route and assumes the same rights as a birth child.  Allowances may be paid to those who adopt sibling groups, older children and those with special needs.
