Vehicle crossings and dropped kerbs

A vehicle crossing is an  area of footpath or verge strengthened to allow vehicles to gain access to property.                                  It is usual for the kerbs to be lowered to make access  easier and safe.

The footpath is generally not constructed to a strength which is sufficient to withstand the weight of vehicles driving over it without causing damage, where it could cause a potential danger to pedestrians.  For this reason under the Highways Act 1980 it is illegal to cross the footway without a properly constructed crossing.
