Can anyone have a vehicle crossing?
Certain roads in Peterborough are 'classified' which generally
means tthat they are he main roads of the
City.
If your road is classified you will require planning permisson for
a vehicle crossing.
Are there any special requirements for a vehicle crossing?
A crossing will not normally be acceptable if a vehicle cannot
be parked within the property boundary without overhanging the
highway. A minimum of 5 metres is required. You will only be
given permission for a vehicle crossing if you have applied for a
Highway Opening Permit which costs £100. This covers the
vetting of a contractor and the administration and supervision of
the construction works.
What may prohibit me from having a vehicle crossing?
You may not be able to have a vehicle crossing if:
- Your property is too close to a junction or bend
- Tress or tree roots are too close to any excavation works
- There is less than 5 metres from the highway boundary to the
edge of your property / building.
Does the Council carry out the works?
No. The work can only be carried out by private contractors who
meet the required highway regulations.
How much will the vehicle crossing cost to construct?
You are required to pay all costs associated with the
installation of a vehicle crossing. Costs can vary depending
on the location and materials used. Hhowever it would be up
to you to obtain quotes from contractors before you make your
choice.
Will the Council help with funding?
Unfortunately the Council is unable to help with funding, but we
advise clients to contact Social Services for advice on grants or
financial help.
How do I know if the works are carried out correctly?
Information on Bogus contractors is available elsewhere in
this section.
Will I own the vehicle crossing?
No. Once the vehicle crossing has been constructed it becomes
part of the public highway. The contractor gives 12 months
maintenance should any problems occur. However, after this period
the vehicle crossing becomes the responsibility of Peterborough
City Council.
How can I stop cars from parking in front of my drive?
The highways department does not have any powers of enforcement
In the event of cars causing an obstruction. This is a Police
matter. Alternatively you may apply for an Access Protection
Marking. This is a single white line painted on the road in front
of a dropped kerb indicating a length of road to be kept clear.
This marking is a courtesy marking and therefore not enforceable by
law. If you wish to apply for one please go
to our roads and pavements section.
