Winter maintenance and gritting

We are responsible for the maintenance of public highways in the area which includes a winter maintenance service. The weather is checked every day to determine whether gritting is required between 1 October and 30 April.

You can keep up to date with the latest gritting information by following us on twitter.

A specialist winter weather forecast service is provided by Meteogroup Ltd which advises of  the possibility of freezing road surface temperatures or snow and gives an approximate time when these conditions may arise. This information enables the highways maintenance team to decide whether gritting is necessary.

Which roads are gritted?

You can view gritting routes on our Hawkeye mapping system. Gritted routes are shown in blue and red.
