The A1073 Spalding to Eye improvement

The A1073 is an important strategic link between Lincolnshire and Eastern England for the distribution of both agricultural and food processing freight and as a local commuter route.

The scheme

The existing road is relatively narrow, has an accident rate well in excess of the national average, attracts high annual maintenance costs and is heavily used, especially by large lorries. Traffic on the route also has a severe environmental impact on the communities it passes through, such as Cowbit and Peak Hill in Lincolnshire and Eye Green in Peterborough.

The A1073 Spalding to Eye improvement scheme is being developed to replace the existing route and is being jointly developed between Lincolnshire County Council and Peterborough City Council. The new road will be designed to modern standards to provide a safer and more reliable journey. Also, being constructed to modern standards, it will not be subject to the ongoing maintenance problems experienced on the existing route. The scheme is included in both Lincolnshire County Council and Peterborough City Council's 2006-2011 Local Transport Plans.

The route for the scheme was chosen after extensive public consultation and exhibitions, and both Peterborough City Council and Lincolnshire County Council have granted planning permission for the scheme. Planning permission was received from Lincolnshire County Council in September 2003 and Peterborough City Council in March 2004. Compulsory Purchase and Side Road Orders were published in March 2004, with the resultant Public Inquiry being held in November 2004. The Orders were confirmed in October 2006.

In July 2006 a decision was received on the Regional Funding Allocations which gave priority to the construction of the A1073 Scheme. A funding application was submitted to the Department for Transport in November 2006. The Department for Transport confirmed their contribution of £69.8m to the £80.3m total cost in November 2007. Work commenced by Morgan Est in March 2008 and will be completed in Late 2010.
