Welland road traffic calming

We invited residents and businesses from the city's Dogsthorpe community to a public exhibition detailing plans to introduce traffic calming measures on Welland Road. The city council is working with Lincolnshire County Council to improve the A1073 route between Spalding and Peterborough This work is due to be completed in 2010.  There is a planning condition requiring that traffic calming  be installed in Welland Road  to deter traffic from entering the city centre via Welland Road and Dogsthorpe.  The new road cannot be opened to traffic until this planning condition has been satisfied.

Public exhibition

The public exhibition was held on Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th October 2008 from 2 pm until 8 pm at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Welland Road, Dogsthorpe. Traffic modelling indicates that without introducing a traffic calming scheme the volume of two-way traffic on Welland Road will increase significantly. Residents were able to comment on the proposed plans, make suggestions and speak with council officers and Atkins Consultants.

A wide range of measures were considered for implementation along Welland Road including priority junctions with build outs, speed cushions, mini roundabouts and speed tables. Options included are:

  • A gateway feature from the A47 (just west of the recycling centre)
  • A weight restriction on lorries entering the Welland Road between the recycling centre and Dogsthorpe Road
  • Three zebra crossings: Tesco Garage, Spar shop and Post Office
  • Some protected 'on road' parking on the north side of Welland Road

A variant outline design option, using a mixture of raised tables and speed cushions was presented as the Preferred Option at the public exhibition.

Public exhibition drawings
