School travel plans

A school travel plan identifies ways of making the journey to school safer and more pleasant by discouraging car use and promoting walking, cycling and bus use. The plan is developed by the school community and is tailored to the school's specific needs. The most successful school travel plans include both 'hard' measures, such as dedicated entrances for pedestrians, speed ramps and cycle storage, and 'soft' measures, such as cycle training, awareness campaigns and reward schemes.

Developing a school travel plan

By helping schools develop a 'school travel plan' we aim to:

  • Improve pupil health and well-being
  • Improve pupil confidence and awareness of their local community
  • Reduce road accidents
  • Reduce traffic congestion and pollution around schools

Our dedicated school travel plan co-ordinator can:

  • Provide information / resources for each stage of the school travel plan process
  • Help schools access funding for their school travel plan
  • Show schools the complimentary services offered by the City Council
  • Link schools with other Peterborough schools working on school travel plans
  • Liase with schools about national events such as Walk to School Week.

Safer journeys to school

Safer Journeys to School is a national initiative whereby local councils work intensively with specific schools to develop their school travel plan, support them in reducing car use on the school run and create safer walking, cycling and bus routes to the school.
