Evening Cycle Rides
During the Green Festival 2011 Travelchoice in partnership with
Sustrans ran four guided rides, each one following one of the
Rural Leisure Guides routes that Travelchoice have
produced.
Cycling the Celtic Causeway
This leisurely 7 mile route started at the Key Theatre, cyclists
then followed the river Nene to the Millenium Bridge where there
was a brief stop for a group photograph. The group then headed
through the Stanground Wash Nature Reserve before ending up back at
the Key Theatre. It was an easy route and a great ride to start off
the evening rides.
Cycling the Nassaburgh Trail
At 13 miles this was the longest of the evening cycle rides, but
with the promise of a BBQ at Willow Brook Farm it was also the best
attended. Starting at Bretton Centre this rural ride passed through
Castor and Ailsworth before stopping at Willow Brook Farm. After
enjoying the refreshments on offer the ride passed through Marholm
and Milton Park before arriving back at Bretton Centre.
Cycling John Clare Country
This was a lovely 11 mile ride which left Werrington Sports
Centre and enjoyed the views around Glinton, Maxey and Helpston,
where a break was taken at Clare Cottage (which was once home to
the famous poet John Clare). Suitably refreshed the ride then
circled back and ended at Werrington Sports Centre.
Cycling the Nene Park Loop
The last ride of the four and probably the easiest was perfect for
bringing the whole family along. Starting at Viersen Platz, this 7
mile route meandered to Ferry Meadows where we stopped for some
refreshments at the Watersports Cafe before heading back via the
Sculpture Park next to the Rowing Lake.
