Safer Journeys to School (SJTS)
The Safer Journeys to School (SJTS) initiative was
introduced in 2000, working with just two schools. Since then the
scheme has grown to emcompass the majority of schools in
Peterborough.
The initiative aims to improve safety, raise awareness
to travel issues and improve the environment around
Peterborough schools.
SJTS Targets
- To improve the safety of the journey to and from school.
- To reduce the risks encountered on the school journey.
- To increase children's road safety awareness.
- To reduce the number of pedestrian and cyclist casualties.
- To reduce car use and promote alternatives such as cycling,
walking and bus use.
- To promote educational links and opportunities for young people
to determine changs to their own environment and travel
habits.

How can my school get SJTS funding?
- Schools that have not yet recieved funding will be invited to
submit a formal application form by December demonstrating what
issues the school has and how the schools see these issues being
addressed with imroved infrastructure.
- SJTS projects are based around the School Travel Plan document,
which has been written by a working group. Working groups usually
include teachers, governors, pupils, council staff and local
residents. If you are interested in the Safer Journeys to School
project or the School Travel Plan, contact your school and ask
whether your name and contact detaila can be added to the working
group list.
