A School Travel Plan (STP) is a written document which outlines a series of ways to make the journey to school safer and more sustainable by encouraging parents and children to walk, cycle,

use public transport and car share. STPs are developed by the school community and tailored to a school's specific needs. Successful STPs include both 'hard' measures, such as dedicated

entrances for pedestrians, speed ramps and cycle storage, and 'soft' measures, such as cycle training, awareness campaigns and reward schemes.

By assisting schools develop an STP we aim to:

  • Improve pupil health and wellbeing
  • Improve pupil confidence and awareness of their local community
  • Reduce road accidents
  • Reduce traffic congestion and pollution around schools

Our dedicated School Travel Plan Team can:

  • Provide information/resources for each stage of the STP process
  • Help schools access funding for their STP
  • Assist schools with the Annual Review process
  • Liase with schools about national events such as Walk to School Week
  • Assist schools with Walking Buses, Park & Strides and other initiatives
  • Keep schools up-to-date with sustainable travel information via the Travelchoice website and Foot:print newsletter

Content of an STP:

  • A brief description of the location, size and type of school
  • A brief description of the travel/transport problems faced by the school cluster
  • The results of a survey to identify how children currently travel to/from school and how they would like to travel to/from school
  • Clearly defined targets and objectives
  • Details of proposed measures
  • A detailed timetable for implementation
  • Clearly defined responsibilities
  • Evidence that all interested parties have been consulted
  • Proposals for monitoring and review

Who benefits from a School Travel Plan?

An STP benefits pupils, parents and the wider community. It will enable pupils, parents and the wider community. It will enable pupils, parents and staff to choose sustainable transport options and reudce the number of cars on the road at peak times. In addition, there are significant health, environment and safety benefits of having an STP.

Review and Monitoring
