Peterborough's Climate Action Day to 'March Forth'

Introduction

On 4 March 2020, Peterborough City Council launched the city’s first annual Climate Action Day. This day saw residents and organisations 'March Forth' to tackle climate change by taking part in emission-reducing behaviours.

Peterborough City Council declared a climate emergency and committed to helping Peterborough become a net-zero carbon city by 2030. As part of this commitment, on 4 March 2020. the Council adopted its first carbon management action plan. The Climate Action Day was created to mark this key date, while extending an invitation to everyone in our community to play their part.

If you’d like to see how much carbon your lifestyle emits, try filling out the survey on the Global Footprint Network website.

Get involved

As almost every decision we make has an impact on carbon emissions we all need to make climate conscious choices throughout our daily lives. Here are some of the changes you could make for our Climate Action Day:

  • Leave the car at home and walk, cycle or use public transport for your commute
  • Implement a 'no printing day' in the office
  • Make a packed lunch to reduce single-use plastic packaging waste
  • Go vegetarian for the day
  • Bring your own reusable bag
  • Visit a second-hand or charity shop

By sharing ideas and tips, we may be able to support each other to make further changes to reduce carbon emissions, so we're asking anyone taking part in the Climate Action Day to share their experience on twitter with the hashtag #PboroMarchForth.

What we're doing

For our part, during previous Climate Action Days, we’ve hosted talks for residents and visitors to learn more about climate change, undertook changes ourselves and challenged our leaders to make an emission-reducing choice for the day.
