Syrian refugees

The government announced in September 2015 that the UK would resettle up to 20,000 Syrian refugees over the next five years.

These refugees will be moved from camps in the countries neighbouring Syria using the established processes for identifying and resettling refugees.

The council agreed to resettle around 100 Syrian refugees (made up of 20 families) in Peterborough over the next five years. The first five families arrived in autumn 2016 as part of the Syrian Vulnerable Person Resettlement Programme.

The government has agreed to cover all the health, social and educational costs for all refugees, this is in addition to them being able to access benefits such as housing. Funding will come from the International Development Fund, so instead of this going to other countries it is being used to support refugees in this country.

Residents from across the city donated more than 400 items to support the arrival of the first five families of Syrian refugees.

A number of charities and organisations supported the appeal including Care Zone, Children of Adam, KingsGate Community Church, PCVS, City College Peterborough, PARCA, Husaini Islamic Centre and Rainbow Saver Credit Union.

The generous response followed an appeal launched at the end of August 2016 asking for items needed to help furnish the homes for the families. Thank you to everyone who was able to support the appeal.

Future donation appeals may be organised ahead of other Syrian families arriving in the city. Residents can ring 01733 747474 or email ask@peterborough.gov.uk if they have any questions or queries.

Residents can also continue to support all families in need in Peterborough by donating to charities such as Care zone or others that are part of the Peterborough Community Assistance Scheme.
