The Education Funding Agency and Peterborough City Council in partnership with Kier Construction are pleased to confirm that proposals are being developed to provide new school facilities for West Town Primary Academy.
The scheme will involve the construction of a new school building including 21 new classrooms, two assembly halls, one with a viewing gallery, a dedicated studio, food technology and art room together with a new kitchen and other supporting ancillary spaces such as dedicated breakout and workspaces.
The new building will support the increase in demand for pupil places in the West Town area and will boost capacity of the school from one and a half to three forms of entry. The new school building will be relocated to Midland Road on the former District Hospital site.
On Wednesday 29 April a public exhibition of the plans is being held at West Town Academy from 2:30pm to 4pm for parents and pupils of the school and 4.30pm to 7pm for the wider community. The design team will be on hand throughout the event and will be pleased to discuss the design proposals with you and would welcome any views you may have.
Plans will continue to be displayed (during school hours) from 30 April to 7 May. If you are unable to attend the session on the 29 April, please take the opportunity to view the plans and leave any comments on the feedback forms provided at reception.
Your views are important to the team and will be considered as the design is developed ahead of submission of the planning application in May 2015.
Subject to the granting of planning consent, it is anticipated that construction work will commence in September 2015 for an Autumn 2016 completion.
As part of the redevelopment of the new site the existing WW1 Memorial Hall also known as the Memorial Hospital will be remodelled, providing a new interior layout, roof and structure; enhancing the existing building’s condition whilst maintaining its principal frontage and character.
In addition to the new accommodation, significant improvements are planned for the wider site. These include new external spaces for outdoor play and learning, dedicated cycle and scooter parking, various soft landscaping features and an expansion to the existing belt of established trees to ensure the new building sits pleasantly in its new setting.
Both West Town Primary and the Academy Trust have been working closely with the appointed design team to develop the initial scheme proposals. However, input from parents, pupils and the local community are critical in ensuring the new school facility continues to meet the needs of the current and future pupil population. As part of this consultation process your views on these draft proposals would be very welcome.
