What is the EU Referendum?

A referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union. The ballot paper asked one question with two choices:

"Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?"

Who can vote?

You were able to vote if you are on the electoral register and you are a citizen of the United Kingdom, Ireland and or a Commonwealth Country.  Citizens of European Union Countries could not vote in this referendum.

Further information

The Chair of the Electoral Commission has overall responsibility for the running if the referendum across the UK. The Electoral Commission will arrange for a booklet about the Referendum to be delivered to each household during June 2016.
