Planning and building regulations advice

Notice: Due to staffing shortages we currently have limited workload capacity. As a result we are having to prioritise processing planning applications over other the services we offer. We have decided to extend the processing time for minor pre-application from 15 to 20 working days and other general enquiries from 10 to 15 working days.

Speaking to a planning officer

We offer free basic advice over the telephone for planning related queries. Please view our frequently asked questions page for contact details.

Planning pre-application advice

If you know that you need planning permission for your proposed development you can submit the details to us as a planning pre-application advice enquiry and we will:

  • give an indication of how likely it is that planning permission would be granted
  • outline the relevant planning policy considerations
  • where relevant highlight any potential highways issues
  • identify what supporting documentation your application will need

We can only give advice on specific proposals submitted to us, we cannot offer suggestions on what kinds of development are acceptable in a particular area. If you are looking for this sort of advice we recommend you consult a professional planning agent.

Building regulations advice

We offer free basic advice over the telephone for building regulations. If you would like to speak to one of our building control surveyors please call 01733 453422. Please be aware that our surveyors are usually out of the office conducting site inspections between 10am and 3pm.

Guidance can also be found on the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) website.
