A new leader and a new Mayor for Peterborough


Councillor John Holdich was named as the new leader of Peterborough City Council at the annual council meeting last night (Wednesday 20 May 2015).

Councillor Holdich retains his education, skills and university portfolio and is now also responsible for communications.

Councillor Wayne Fitzgerald was confirmed as the deputy leader of the council and will also be cabinet member for integrated adult social care and health.

A number of cabinet positions remain unchanged – Councillor Sheila Scott continues as the lead for children’s services and Councillor David Seaton remains cabinet member for resources. Councillor Lucia Serluca retains her portfolio for city centre management, culture and tourism – including the council’s partnership with Vivacity.

Councillor Nigel North also continues as cabinet member for communities and environmental capital – which includes responsibility for community cohesion and safety. Councillor Graham Casey retains his position as cabinet advisor to the cabinet member for city centre management, culture and tourism with particular emphasis on culture and recreation – as well as adding his role as champion for heritage to his cabinet role.

Councillor Peter Hiller adds growth and economic development to his planning and housing portfolios – his responsibilities include promoting the city as a centre for business growth as well as attracting external funding for regeneration projects in the city. While Councillor Gavin Elsey becomes the cabinet’s lead on Digital Peterborough as well as retaining his portfolios for waste and street scene, including overseeing the council’s partnerships with Amey and Viridor.

Councillor Diane Lamb is made cabinet member for public health after formerly holding the position of cabinet advisor for health. Councillor Yasmeen Maqbool is appointed as cabinet advisor for children’s safeguarding.

Councillor John Peach was declared as the city’s new Mayor and Councillor Nazim Khan as Deputy Mayor. The Mayoress will be Janet Martin and Deputy Mayoress Mrs Naseem Khan.

An amendment was also passed last night which elected Councillor Nick Sandford as chair of the sustainable growth and environmental capital scrutiny committee, with Councillor Nick Thulbourn as vice-chair. It was also agreed that each of the chairs and vice-chairs of the council’s other scrutiny committees should be decided by the committee itself in accordance with the council’s standing orders. These positions will be confirmed in the coming days.
