Armistice Day and Christmas lights switch-on keep Mayor busy

An Armistice Day service of remembrance and the Christmas lights switch-on are among the dates in the mayoral diary next week.

Tuesday 10 November: The Mayor and Mayoress will attend a Remembrance Ceremony along with the Royal British Legion and Reverend Donald McFadyen. There will be prayers and laying of a wreath at Diligenta, Lynch Wood, Peterborough between 10.45am and 12.15pm.

Tuesday 10 November: The Mayor will attend the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade Annual Dinner. The dinner will be attended by current and honorary members. The event will be held at The Bull Hotel, Midgate, Peterborough between 7pm and 11pm.

Tuesday 10 November: The Deputy Mayor will make a speech and open the Peterborough Art Society’s Annual Art Exhibition. This is an annual art exhibition by local artists with approximately 150 pictures on display and for sale. The exhibition will take place at St John’s Church, Cathedral Square, Peterborough between 7.15pm and 8.30pm.

Wednesday 11 November: The Mayor, Mayoress and Deputy Mayor will lead a procession from the Town Hall including councillors, dignitaries, Freemen of the City, Honorary Aldermen and guests who will attend an Armistice Day service. Reverend Canon Ian Black will conduct the short service at 10.55am, which will be followed by the launch of a maroon rocket at 11am to mark the start of two minutes' silence at the war memorial on Bridge Street, Peterborough.

Wednesday 11 November: The Mayor, Mayoress and Deputy Mayor will attend the annual European Local Democracy Week where the Mayor will make an opening speech and then judge and present prizes to students. This year's theme has been living together in multicultural societies, respect, dialogue and interaction. Primary schools were asked to enter a competition to demonstrate how they embrace community cohesion by organising events at their school through the school's council.

The prizes are a VIP fire station visit for the winning team and a disco for the winning school. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue will also be in attendance with a fire engine at the back of the Town Hall. The presentation will take place in the Reception Room, Town Hall, Bridge Street, Peterborough between 3pm and 6pm.

Friday 13 November: The Mayor and Mayoress will open 1Stop4Business seminar. 1stop4business is a collaborative marketing group of business professionals and the seminar showcases support for Peterborough commerce with a series of mini-seminars. The event will take place at Allia Future Business Centre, London Road, Peterborough between 3pm and 5pm.

Friday 13 November: The Mayor and Mayoress will attend the Federation of Small Businesses’ Annual General Meeting where the Mayor will make a speech. The meeting will take place at the Holiday Inn, Thorpe Wood, Peterborough between 7.45pm and 10pm.

Saturday 14 November: The Mayor and Mayoress will open Netherton Friendship Club’s Christmas Sale to raise funds for their charity. The sale will be held at St Andrew's Church Hall, Ledbury Road, Netherton, Peterborough between 10am and 11am.

Saturday 14 November: The Mayor and Mayoress will attend this year’s Christmas Lights switch-on along with athlete Louis Smith. The switch-on will take place on Cathedral Square just before 5pm with entertainment starting at midday. Following the switch-on between 5pm and 7.30pm Louis Smith will be selling signed copies of his 2016 calendar in the Town Hall. The Mayor will be hosting a mince pie and mulled wine reception at the same time.

The Town Hall will be open from 2pm with stalls selling various festive goods including sweets and gifts, natural stone jewellery, vintage Christmas decorations, bespoke cards, decorations and candles.
