Council adds voice to regulator to encourage best energy deal for residents

With news last week that Ofgem is placing a price cap on prepayment meters Peterborough City Council is reminding people that it’s always worth shopping around for your energy supplier.

The energy regulator’s temporary cap on prepayment meters is a result of the Competition and Markets Authority's two-year investigation of the energy market and a bid to protect Pay As You Go (PAYG) customers who have fewer, more expensive, tariffs open to them.

The temporary price cap from this April until 2020 will mean average savings of £80* a year with lower-income households set to benefit as the biggest users of PAYG.

With most energy suppliers raising their prices there are still savings to be had for people across a range of tariffs. In January, Peterborough Energy, the council's energy supplier exclusively for residents of the city, welcomed its 6,000th household taking residents' cumulative savings to just shy of £1.4 million.

Peterborough Energy's PAYG tariff is already below the level of the price cap.

Councillor John Holdich, city council leader, said: "Ofgem’s announcement is more evidence that too many people are still paying far too much their energy. I'd encourage everyone to shop around, including looking at our own local Peterborough Energy tariff which has a reputation for being good value. With customers’ collective savings already running to well over £1 million, I’m sure that more people could be benefiting.”
