Flag raised for armed forces

The Mayor of Peterborough will lead a service to mark the start of Armed Forces Week (Monday 22 to Sunday 28 June).

The service will take place on Monday 22 June at 10.15am at the War Memorial outside the Town Hall, on Bridge Street, Peterborough.

The Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor John Peach, will be joined by Peterborough City Council's armed forces champion, Councillor John Fox.

Councillor Fox will serve as armed forces champion for the municipal year 2015/16. Councillor Fox served as a radio operator in the Royal Navy for 11 years, joining the service at the age of 15. He served at HMS Ganges, a shore establishment signals school.

The Mayor said: "Armed Forces Week is an opportunity to remember the sacrifice given by so many and celebrate the contribution our servicemen and women make to the fabric of our country.

"Peterborough enjoys a long and varied association with all the armed forces, meaning events such as the flag raising are always well attended.

"The flag raising promises to be a fitting start to an emotional week, so I encourage people in Peterborough to come along to the Town Hall to mark their respects."

Councillor John Fox said: "I am very proud to be serving as armed forces champion this year. I am here to support personnel that need help and raise awareness of many of the challenges those leaving the forces face.

"Please come along to the flag raising, concert or armed forces day celebrations to support those that give their all for our country."

The Mayor will be joined by residents and local representatives of all armed forces. The flag will be raised above the Town Hall at 10.30am.

Residents are also encouraged to attend a concert in support of Armed Forces Day on Friday 19 June at The Parkway Social Club. Tickets are £12 and include a buffet. For more information call 07905 568690.
