Puffin crossing installed outside primary school

A puffin crossing has been installed outside a primary school as part of Peterborough City Council's Safer Journeys to School programme.

The £100,000 crossing and associated resurfacing work at Gunthorpe Road near Norwood Primary School, Gunthorpe, officially opens on Monday 28 September.

The introduction of the puffin crossing followed calls for a signal controlled crossing in this area from parents, staff, governors and ward councillors.

Councillor Peter Hiller, Peterborough City Council cabinet member for growth, planning, housing and economic development, said: “The puffin crossing gives pedestrians on this busy road the confidence they need to cross it safely.

"This is especially important as it is near the entrance to Norwood Primary School and the safety of young pupils is of the utmost importance.

"The Safer Journeys to Schools projects enable young people to make journeys in a safe and active way.

"It is part of the council’s Local Transport Plan which aims to improve transport for everyone who lives, works or travels in Peterborough."

Clair George, senior road safety officer at Peterborough City Council, said: "Working with Norwood Primary School our road safety educational programme will teach the children how to use the puffin crossing correctly and to always take extra care when crossing any road, not just this one.

"This is a really busy road and the message to parents and children is to please use the crossing. It is there for your safety and for drivers' safety too."

Deborah Reynold, headteacher, said: "I’m thrilled to have this puffin crossing facility for our school community.

"We encourage children to walk or bike to school and live a healthy lifestyle but nothing is more important than keeping our children and their families safe.

"This is a busy road and it is something staff, governors and parents are keenly aware of when it comes to our pupils' safety. Hopefully this crossing will increase the safety of our children for years to come."
