Councillor Nick Sandford elected as Peterborough Mayor

23 May 2023

Councillor Nick Sandford was elected as the city's first citizen at the annual meeting of Peterborough City Council yesterday (22 May 2023).

During the meeting it was also confirmed that Cllr Judy Fox will be Deputy Mayor for 2023-24 with Cllr John Fox as her Consort. Former councillor, Alderman Bella Saltmarsh will be Mayoress.

The Mayor's focus will be on promoting health and well-being and his chosen charities will be Deaf Blind UK, Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, Peterborough Environmental City Trust (PECT) the East Anglian Air Ambulance and MAGPAS.

Cllr Sandford said: “When I was first elected as a councillor, just over 27 years ago, I never thought I would end up achieving the position of Mayor of Peterborough. I now take on that role with the same feelings of excitement but also with a measure of trepidation at the task ahead that I first felt all those years ago.

“I will aim to champion the city of Peterborough and reach out and engage with all of our diverse communities. I met with many different groups during my time as Deputy Mayor and I’m looking forward to doing this even more as Mayor. I also look forward to attending our major civic events such as Remembrance Sunday, Armed Forces Day and Holocaust Memorial Day.

“Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to my fellow councillors for electing me to this role. I have sworn to do the job to the best of my ability, and I will strive hard to live up to that pledge.”

Cllr Sandford was first elected to Walton ward in 1996 and subsequently to the Paston and Walton ward when the boundaries were changed. Whilst originally from Huddersfield he eventually settled in Peterborough in 1984.

Cllr Sandford has now retired from full time employment but previously he worked for the Woodland Trust for 30 years. He is a member of PECT and was previously a board member. He has a keen interest in protecting the environment and is a regular worshipper at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Bretton (C of E). He also has a degree in Biochemistry from Oxford University (Merton College).
