Fly the Flag for Windrush 75

19 June 2023

The remarkable contributions of the Windrush generation will be celebrated with a special flag-raising ceremony in Peterborough city centre to mark a historic anniversary.

Peterborough City Council will be hosting ‘Fly the Flag for Windrush 75’ on Thursday 22 June, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush arriving in Britain, bringing over 800 passengers from the Caribbean.

Leading the ceremony will be the Deputy Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor Judy Fox, who will oversee a brief service culminating in the raising of the flag outside the Town Hall in Bridge Street.

The service will start at the front entrance of the Town Hall at 9.45am and all are welcome to attend. Following the ceremony, refreshments will be served in the Mayor's Parlour.

Councillor Steve Allen, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said: “The Fly the Flag Ceremony for Windrush 75 promises to be a special occasion, honouring the Windrush generation's legacy and commemorating their contributions to the community.

“We encourage everyone to join us in celebrating the rich cultural heritage and resilience exemplified by this exceptional generation.”

The event is being organised and part-funded by Peterborough Windrush in partnership with Peterborough City Council. The 75th Standard will also be raised during the ceremony, symbolising the significance of this milestone year.

Pastor Michael Schawsmidth of NTCG Peterborough will deliver a prayer, and there will be captivating performances by soloist Gabriella Pineda Rodrigues and Octavius Steel Pan.
