Peterborough City Council and partners unveil inspiring events to celebrate Refugee Week 2023

30 May 2023

Peterborough City Council is holding a ‘Compassion in Crisis’ event as part of a series of celebrations that will take place across the city as part of Refugee Week 2023 (June 19 - 25). The event will feature discussion, and interactive activities, highlighting refugees' voices, celebrating their unique journeys, and nurturing a sense of belonging within our city.

As a council committed to fostering unity, understanding, and compassion within our diverse community, we proudly showcase this initiative to promote awareness, celebrate refugee contributions, and support the integration of refugees into society.

Refugee Week is a nationwide initiative that seeks to shed light on refugees' experiences, talents, and resilience while promoting a culture of inclusion and appreciation.

This year, the council has actively worked with local organisations, community leaders and dedicated volunteers on various initiatives to promote the spirit of the city and showcase the rich cultural heritage refugees bring to our communities.

The following free events will take place, and all are welcome to attend:

  • Compassion in Crisis, 3pm – 6pm, Saturday 17 June, Town Hall, Bridge Street. Find out more here
  • Project O, 2.30pm, Saturday, 24 June, Key Theatre. Find out more here

Both events aim to promote discussion, cultural exchange, and opportunities for refugees and community members to connect and learn from one another.

Cllr Steve Allen, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said: “We are excited to host the Compassion in Crisis event at Town Hall. It’s a great way to welcome those who have arrived in the city through refugee schemes or as asylum seekers, as well as host families that have helped people adapt and become part of our diverse communities.

“In addition, we hope to welcome anyone interested in learning more, as local refugees share their experiences and help contribute to some of the local support organisations that will also be there on the day.”
