Peterborough City Council officially opens doors to the first of its new Family Hubs

12 July 2023

Following a successful £3.5 million Family Hubs and Start for Life grant, secured by the council from central government, Peterborough City Council has opened the first of three Family Hubs, designed to make it quicker and simpler for families to get practical support.

The breadth of services that will be available from the Family Hub will include parenting and feeding advice, support with wellbeing and mental health, and early language development. There will also be youth activities for young people aged 11 to 19.

The first Family Hub is located at First Steps Child and Family Centre and services will be delivered by Peterborough City Council staff and partner organisations including the NHS Healthy Child Programme, Midwifery, Barnardo’s, NCT and various voluntary sector organisations.

Peterborough City Council is planning to open two more hubs in the city in the coming weeks. These will be located at:

· Honeyhill Child and Family Centre – Paston

· Orton Child and Family Centre – Orton

The Family Hub was officially opened on the 12th of July, by the families and children who attend the centre.

They were joined by Cllr Andy Coles, Cabinet Member for Legal, Finance and Corporate Services, Deputy Mayor and Consort, Cllr Judy Fox and John Fox, and ward councillors Cllr Dennis Jones and Cllr Katy Cole.

The event was attended by staff, families, and representatives from local partner organisations. In addition to the physical hubs, there is also a virtual Family Hubs offer on Peterborough Council’s website, which draws together information, advice and signposting to further support for families and young people in one easy-to-access online hub.

Jackie Allen, Cabinet Lead for Children’s Services, Education, Skills and University, Peterborough City Council, said:

“We are thrilled to be opening the first of three Family Hubs today. These hubs will provide a central point of contact for families and young people, making it easier for them to access vital services, advice and support in one place. It’s a dynamic new way to support and deliver services for our children, young people and families. “

“By improving access to services and bringing whole-family support under one roof, these hubs will help families overcome challenges and should ultimately help to improve outcomes for children and young people and their families. We know that the right support provided at the earliest opportunity can make all the difference. Delivering services that help families create supportive, stable environments for their children is an important part of Family Hubs and that’s why these hubs are so important. They will ensure families get the support they need from birth through to adulthood.”

“We’re working closely with partner organisations, as well as families, across the city as we shape and develop this service. We are looking forward to extending this support with more hubs due to open later this year.”

The Family Hub at First Steps is open from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Thursday and to 4.30 pm Friday.
