500th customer signs up to Peterborough Energy

Peterborough residents have saved a combined total of £100,000 on their gas and electricity bills by switching to Peterborough Energy, Peterborough City Council's new energy supply.

Already 500 residents are reaping the rewards of changing to Peterborough Energy, a local energy partnership formed by the city council and award winning national supplier OVO Energy, since it went live at the start of May.

The dual and single fuel (electricity only) energy tariffs are exclusive to residents with Peterborough local authority area postcodes and the fixed tariff is in the top five cheapest* available according to the consumer advice publication Which?.

Residents could save an average of £252** on their energy bills, and the 500th customer to sign up was Joyce Wheeler, from Orton Waterville, Peterborough, who was also presented with a hamper by The Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor John Peach.

Mrs Wheeler, who can expect to save £265, said: "This is the first time I have switched energy supplier and I decided to do so after receiving a letter advertising Peterborough Energy in the post. I was also a little unhappy with my former supplier.

"The saving is fantastic and will mean I can put the heating on a lot more this winter."

Councillor Peach has also just switched to Peterborough Energy and will now save around £414 a year.

Councillor Peach said: “The saving is great and it was hassle-free to switch. It had been a long time since I last switched energy provider as it is often something you can forget to do in the busy routine of daily life.

“It is also pleasing to see the excellent take up by Peterborough residents to date. It is clear a lot of people are saving money.

"I would urge residents to look at the Peterborough Energy tariffs when considering switching providers, especially with autumn just around the corner when attentions turn towards heating the home over the winter months."

A spokesperson for OVO Energy comments: “We are very pleased with the take up of Peterborough Energy within the city, and to collectively save residents an average of £100,000 in just a matter of months is quite an achievement. We look forward to working with Peterborough City Council to continue building on these early successes for the energy partnership.”

To help even more residents save money, Peterborough Energy has also launched a competitive PAYG (pay-as-you-go) tariff to bring cheaper gas and electricity to customers with pre-payment meters.
