Chance for charities to bid for

Charities can nominate themselves for one of five £1,000 grants thanks to a sponsorship partnership between the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and Perkins Great Eastern Run.

The £5,000 was raised through generous donations at last year’s event in Peterborough and is now ready to be distributed to local good causes.

In this new community initiative, nominations are welcome from charities in Peterborough that support children or anyone affected by cancer.

The Jane Tomlinson Appeal was launched as a lasting legacy to Jane who died in 2007 aged just 43. Despite suffering from terminal cancer Jane raised £1.8 million for children's and cancer charities through a series of incredible endurance feats.

As the date for this year’s event on Sunday 8 October gets closer the giveaway marks the second year of the charity and Perkins Great Eastern Run fundraising together.

Peterborough is a special place for Jane’s family as it’s where they lived when the children were young. Her daughter Rebecca, one of three children, was born at Peterborough District Hospital and ran the half marathon for the appeal in 2016.

Rebecca said: "We’re so excited that the Perkins Great Eastern Run has chosen to support the Jane Tomlinson Appeal again in 2017. My parents moved to Peterborough not long after they got married and I was born there, so the city will always be really special to me. To know that the city is helping to carry on mum’s legacy now is really touching."

Mike Tomlinson, Jane’s husband, added: "We are thrilled to be involved in the Perkins Great Eastern Run for a second year and wanted to give something back. Jane Tomlinson Appeal runners raised £3,500 at the event in 2016; the charity has topped up that sum to £5,000 to give back to the city’s good causes."

Annette Joyce, Peterborough City Council’s service director for city services and communications, said: "The Perkins Great Eastern run is a fantastic event full of extraordinary people doing extraordinary things and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal is no exception. We’re delighted at their support for Peterborough and incredibly grateful for this new community fund that is going to benefit charities in our city."

Nominations must be received by Monday 14 August 2017 to be considered for a grant.

To nominate, people can pick up a form from the Visitor Information Centre, Bridge Street, Peterborough or visit the Jane Tomlinson Appeal website.

Free, coached running sessions take place at Peterborough Athletics Track every Wednesday at 7.30am and 12noon until July 5. All abilities are welcome.
