Is your new year's resolution to improve your digital skills or do you know somebody who would like help with this?
Over the past three and a half years Peterborough City Council, in partnership with Serco, has been running a Digital Inclusion training scheme aimed at assisting anyone who wants to boost their computing and online know-how.
The scheme covers aspects including an introduction to using the internet, help with setting up an email and using a device to keep in touch with your friends and family.
The sessions are aimed at helping people of all ages and are free to attend.
The council runs regular ‘online basics’ drop-in sessions at libraries across the city on a weekly and monthly basis and also organises five week training courses, which have been taken up by a number of community groups with great success. The next five week course starts on February 5 at Community Corner in Cattle Market Road, Peterborough.
Matthew Beckett, from the PCC/Serco digital inclusion team, said: “As more and more services are becoming digital in the future, it is important to ensure that residents are aware of the benefits of using the internet and have the relevant skills and confidence to use it.
"All the sessions are free and everything is done at people’s pace, in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
“At this time of year, many people want to make new starts or take up hobbies or training, so if this is you, or if you have a family relative, friend or work with somebody that you feel may need some additional support, then please do get in touch."
By taking part in the five week training course, participants can expect to learn the following:
- Differences between devices;
- Using the Peterborough City Council website, highlighting benefits such as paying by Direct Debit online and communication with us through social media;
- How to complete online forms;
- Keeping safe online;
- Setting up an email account and how to use it;
- Accessing organisational websites;
- Online shopping;
- Catch-up TV; and
- Connecting with friends and family.
New and existing sessions, including both drop-ins and 5-week courses are regularly being added, so for further information and to find out how we could help you, please contact our our Digital Inclusion team on 07815 628673 or 07976 382823.
