Families are invited to a special fun day in Peterborough this weekend which is being held to help bring communities together.
The event takes place in Central Park on Saturday September 1 from 10.30am and will feature a community cricket match between Peterborough City Council, Cambridgeshire Police, Cambridgeshire Fire Service and members of the Joint Mosque Council (JMC).
The match, which was previously held at the Jack Hunt School, is being organised in partnership between Peterborough City Council, Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Cambridgeshire Fire Service, Friends of Central Park, Cricket East, The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and the JMC.
A ‘Peterborough Community Cup’ is being donated by Cricket East for the winners of the match and it is hoped that the game will be played on an annual basis.
Jawaid Khan, Head of Community Integration at Peterborough City Council, said: “We hope the match will enable cricket to showcase our ongoing efforts to further integrate communities and support cohesion across the city.
“Sport has the power to bring people from different backgrounds together and unite them to a common cause. This year’s match has been relocated to a green space in the heart of the city so we hope to see a big turnout.”
The match will last for around two hours and be played with a softer ball utilising a roll out plastic Flicx pitch.
The Cricket East team plan to run a couple of hours of fun filed cricket-related activities after the match especially for youngsters.
There will also be a friendly volleyball match from 12pm until 4pm on the grass tennis court behind the Buttercross coffee shop with prizes for the winners. Eight teams from mixed communities have already registered. All are welcome to take part.
JMC members will be donating food and refreshments to players and spectators. Participants will be asked to make voluntary donations to support Pancreatic Cancer UK.
