With the entry deadline only a few weeks away, now is your last chance to get a team together and enter the spectacular Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival which takes place at Thorpe Meadows on Saturday 13 June! Nearly 30 teams from Greater Peterborough and surrounding areas have already signed up and are eagerly anticipating a day of fun on the water in aid of Sue Ryder – Thorpe Hall Hospice.
The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. To take part, no previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit and enthusiasm! Medals and trophies are up for grabs for the top three crews, top mixed crew and the ‘best dressed’ crew. The top fundraising crew for Thorpe Hall Hospice will also receive a special prize worth £600 comprising a private raceview suite with delicious finger buffet and sponsored race courtesy of Peterborough Greyhound Stadium!
As well as the dragon boat racing, teams and spectators will be able to enjoy a whole variety of bankside entertainment including funfair rides, children’s activities, giant inflatables, food stalls and a bar. There will even be a special flypast by a Lancaster bomber from the Battle of Britain Memorial flight at around 1.30pm! Entrance to the Festival is free to spectators.
Visitors will also be able to find out more about the work of Festival charity, Sue Ryder-Thorpe Hall Hospice. The doors of the new hospice are set to open this summer and funds raised by teams in the Dragon Boat Festival will be vital to help keep the project on track.
Thorpe Hall’s head of hospice fundraising Lucy Squance comments, “We are thrilled with the way that local businesses have got right behind the Festival and taken up the challenge. It will be a wonderful day for colleagues to get together, cheered on by their families and friends, and there is still time to jump on board!
"We really appreciate the continuing support of the community and local companies to help us with the £6 million capital appeal. Our own Thorpe Dragons are not expecting to win but we look forward to taking part and seeing you all there!”
