Please note: Peterborough City Council will no longer be providing the Nationality Document Return Service (including Joint Citizenship and Passport Applications) from the end of November 2018. The Nationality Checking Service will be offered until 20 December 2018, subject to availability.

The European passport return service

The European passport return service is for EEA or Swiss nationals who have applied online for a document certifying permanent residence or for a qualifying person registration certificate. It can also be used by their non-EEA family members, if they are applying at the same time.

We can copy your passport and send the copy to the Home Office, along with your original supporting documents, application form and checklist. This means that you can keep your passport while your application is with the Home Office.

Please note that we can only copy your passport – for all other documents, the originals must be sent. This includes the documents supporting your application and, if applicable, ID cards.

The European passport return service cannot provide any advice on your application or give any guarantees as to its outcome. We cannot check your supporting documents or your application form.

Once your application is sent to the Home Office, you will need to contact the Home Office directly if you have any queries. The Home Office will contact you if they have any questions for you or if they require any further documents.

Using the service

We offer a walk-in service at Peterborough Register Office every Thursday between 11am and 4pm. You do not need an appointment so please do not telephone in advance. However, please be aware that waiting times will vary depending on the demand for the service and if we have a particularly high number of applicants we cannot guarantee that we will be able to see you. In this circumstance it is possible you may have to return the following week.

Appointments should last approximately 20 minutes per application.

The cost of the service is £25 for each applicant, including postage. Payment is taken at the appointment, by card or cash.

The requirements of the service

The service only relates to online applications for a document certifying permanent residence or a qualifying person registration certificate.

The service can be used by EEA or Swiss nationals. It can also be used by their non-EEA family members, provided that they are applying at the same time as the EEA national.

The date that you use our service must be within 10 working days of the date on which you submitted your online application.

All applicants aged 15 years and 6 months or over must attend in person.

Please bring the following:

  • Your original passport(s)
  • Your original supporting documents
  • A printed copy of your completed online application form
  • Your completed checklist
  • Your PNN number
  • Two identical passport photos with your name written on the back

If you do not meet these requirements, we may not be able to send your application.
