The City Council has published its Draft Local Plan today (10 March 2025) for consideration by its Planning and Environment Protection Committee on 18 March, ahead of a Cabinet meeting on 20 March 2025.
The Cabinet will be asked to approve the Draft Local Plan for public consultation.
Subject to approval, public consultation is expected to begin Friday 11 April 2025 to Thursday 29 May 2025.
The development of the Draft Local Plan follows a public consultation on an Issues and Options document from the Summer of 2023. A report summarising the comments received was published in November 2023 and has helped to inform the Draft Local Plan.
In January 2023, Full Council agreed to prepare a new Local Plan for Peterborough which sets out the vision to support new homes, workspaces, transport, community facilities and other infrastructure.
The emerging Plan will eventually replace the current Local Plan, which as adopted in July 2019.
Councillor Nick Thulbourn, Cabinet Member for Growth and Regeneration, said: “It’s essential we plan well for our future generations, providing space for people to live and work, raise families and contribute to the local economy.
“As an administration, one of our main aims is to support Peterborough in becoming a more family-friendly city. This includes planning for commercial spaces, green spaces, leisure and education and providing a high-quality mix of homes.
“We know growth can sometimes be challenging for communities, and must be carried out in a planned way, which means making sure space for homes and businesses is allocated proportionally.
“Plans to consult in the Autumn of last year were paused, to await the outcomes of proposed planning changes from government. This has meant we’ve been able to include our new mandatory housing target of 1,006 new homes a year.”
This updated version of the draft Local Plan reflects feedback received from a number of consultations and engagements in recent years.
If Cabinet approves the updated Plan for consultation, residents will be able to have their say in a variety of ways.
The Draft Local Plan is available to view on the latest Planning and Environmental Committee agenda.
