Women in Peterborough are being encouraged to start using a reusable period product which is helping to protect the environment.

Building on the success of an initial scheme in the region, the Mooncup programme is now being supported by Peterborough City Council as part of an initiative funded by The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership (RECAP).

The reusable Mooncup menstrual cup contains no plastics or toxins and lasts for several years. By switching to a reusable Mooncup, each person can avoid throwing away about 264 single-use menstrual products every year.

This has a significant impact on the environment as disposable menstrual products add 200,000 tonnes of waste to UK waste disposal sites annually. By offering reusable menstrual cups, the council aims to tackle this environmental challenge by enabling residents to adopt more sustainable habits.

Councillor Angus Ellis, Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We are fully committed to looking at different ways to help protect the environment, such as reducing the amount of waste which is sent for disposal. We’re supporting the Mooncup scheme and will be promoting messages around the campaign on our social media channels over the coming weeks, so please look out for these."

Bryony Rothwell, Waste Partnership Manager at RECAP, stated: “This programme reflects our commitment to waste reduction. By providing such incentives, we’re hoping to enable our residents to make sustainable, cost-effective choices.”

Emily Smith, Head of B2B, UK & International at Mooncup said: “We are thrilled to partner with Peterborough City Council and RECAP on this important initiative. By providing them with reusable menstrual cups, we continue to support the cause of making sustainable choices accessible.”

Mooncups are now available to order online for just £5 (worth £23) visit here.
