About the Pride in Place Programme

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has selected Peterborough to receive up to £40m of Pride in Place funding to support regeneration in the city.

Pride in Place is a Government funded programme. It is aimed at putting power into the hands of local people in some of the most in-need neighbourhoods across the UK, so that they can decide how to regenerate their local area.

It gives communities control of up to £2m every year for the next 10 years. The money is to be spent on projects that will make a real difference to the areas they live. A key part of the programme is that it is locally led, by those who know their communities best.

Pride in Place neighbourhoods were identified and selected by the UK Government using a national methodology. This approach used a combination of national data and measures of community need to identify neighbourhoods experiencing the most significant social and economic challenges.

Areas of Peterborough involved

The Government has pledged up to £40m to Peterborough for:

  • Orton Malborne and Orton Goldhay
  • Paston, Gunthorpe and Welland

The funding will be split equally between the two areas. It will support the delivery of investment and improvement in community services, such as regeneration, education, health and employment.

Pride in Place is about putting local people at the heart of decisions that affect their communities. Residents are at the centre of the programme, with local voices shaping how funding is used and what priorities are delivered. The programme focuses on creating meaningful, visible change that reflects community needs and aspirations.

The programme is built on three key objectives

  • Stronger communities
  • Thriving places
  • Taking back control

Role of the Neighbourhood Boards and Peterborough City Council

MHCLG requires that clear governance arrangements and supporting documentation are put in place to demonstrate transparent, inclusive and accountable decision making. The governance arrangements and board membership are required to be confirmed to MHCLG by mid-July 2026, alongside publication of key governance documents.

We will establish a board for each neighbourhood. In line with MHCLG guidance, the boards will have independent chairs and be comprised of residents and people working in the neighbourhood.

You can find information about each Neighbourhood Board on the Orton Malborne and Orton Goldhay page and the Paston, Gunthorpe and Welland page.

Role of the Neighbourhood Boards

The Neighbourhood Boards will:

  • Lead and oversee community engagement activity
  • Develop high-level plans and funding priorities
  • Oversee the priorities and day-to-day work of staff working on the project
  • Recommend and approve projects and proposals
  • Adhere to the Nolan Principles

Role of Peterborough City Council

We will work closely with the Neighbourhood Boards in our role as the Accountable Body:

  • Act as secretariat to the Neighbourhood Boards
  • Oversee legal and financial responsibility for the programme
  • Ensure funding allocations and expenditure are directed by the Neighbourhood Boards and approved through legitimate processes to ensure compliance with statutory, financial and audit requirements
  • Undertake due diligence, subsidy control and procurement checks
