At a birth or death registration appointment, or during a marriage or civil partnership ceremony, you will be asked to check that the information recorded is correct. We will then ask you to sign and confirm this.

If you notice any errors after you have signed, correcting these will be a lengthy and expensive process.

Some corrections can be authorised locally, while others will need referring to the General Register Office.

Apply for a correction

To apply for a correction, please email peterboroughregisteroffice@peterborough.gov.uk.

Correction fees

There are fees payable for the consideration of the correction. This does not mean that the correction will be authorised.

The following national fees apply:

  • Corrections which we are able to authorise locally: £83.00
  • Corrections which we need to refer to the Registrar General: £99.00

Once a correction has been completed, old certificates that show the error will no longer be valid. You will need to purchase new certificates. They cost £12.50 each. You can do this at your appointment. We are a cashless office, so can only accept card or other contactless payment.

We also have an online certificate ordering system.

If it is required by the Registrar General, you may also need to pay for a statutory declaration.

If you would like to apply for a correction, or have any queries, please contact us. It is usually best to contact us by email.
