The Safer Peterborough Partnership brings together agencies to keep our city and communities safe. One of their priorities is to reduce drug and alcohol related crime by reducing drug and alcohol dependency.

How to get help with a drug or alcohol problem
If you, or someone you know, has an issue with drugs or alcohol, there is help available:
- Talk to FRANK - confidential and friendly advice on drugs.
- Aspire Recovery Service - Peterborough – Aspire Recovery Service has two locations in Peterborough – Bridge Street and Bretton. The service is available for anyone who wants support with drug or alcohol issues, including family, friends and carers. Aspire will listen to you and understand your needs. They will tailor their support to suit you and can offer a range of options to help with recovery.
Needle Exchange Program
The Needle Exchange Program is delivered by local pharmacies. It is a safe and confidential environment for adults using approved needle exchange packs and equipment. The overall aim of the service is to support individuals to reduce the potential harm from injecting drug use, both to themselves and to the local community, through the provision of clean injecting paraphernalia and harm reduction advice.
Needle bins
We have needle bins installed in various areas of Peterborough. This is to help reduce discarded drugs paraphernalia in public places and keep residents safe.
Each bin has a sticker stating 'sharps disposal'. The locations of the bins were determined by needles find data:

- Wharf Road Cycle Crossing, PE2 9NZ

Our waste contractor Aragon Direct Services empties the needle bins around every two months. The needle bins have a large capacity and are locked securely.
The bins are only for needle users. Do not put anything in the bin if you are not the needle user.
Report discarded needles or drugs equipment
If you come across any discarded needles or drugs equipment in a public place:
- Do not touch the needle(s) or equipment
- Report it immediately by calling our Customer Services Team on 01733 747474
- Let us know as much information about the location as you can to help us find it
- Our waste contractor Aragon Direct Services will attend the location to safely dispose of the needle(s)
Please note we cannot remove needles and drug equipment discarded on private land.
What to do if you are pricked by a discarded needle
If you pierce your skin with a used needle, the NHS advises you:
- Gently squeeze the wound to encourage it to bleed (ideally while holding it under running water)
- Wash the wound using running water and plenty of soap
- Do not scrub or suck the wound
- Dry the wound and cover it with a waterproof plaster or dressing
Get urgent medical advice from NHS 111 online, calling 111, or going to your nearest A&E. You may need treatment to reduce the risk of getting an infection.
Report drug related crime
Report any drug related crime or suspicious activity to:
- Police – call 101
- Crimestoppers – call 0800 555 1111 anonymously
