Emergency planning in Peterborough

At Peterborough City Council, we are committed to protecting residents, businesses and services from the impact of emergencies.

As a Category One responder under the Civil Contingencies Act (CCA) 2004, we have a legal duty to ensure that Peterborough is prepared for, able to respond to, and help communities recover from emergencies of any kind.

Emergency planning is a key part of our resilience work. It involves developing robust emergency plans and coordinating effective responses to incidents that may impact our community.

What is emergency planning?

Emergency planning is the structured process of:

  • Preparing for emergencies such as floods, fires, pandemics and major accidents
  • Responding effectively to protect lives, property and services
  • Recovering quickly to restore normal operations and community wellbeing

Working with partners - the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Local Resilience Forum (CPLRF)

Peterborough City Council is a member of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Local Resilience Forum (CPLRF). The CPLRF is a multi-agency partnership made up of representatives from local public services who work together to:

  • Ensure the county is as prepared as we can be for a wide range of emergency situations
  • Identify and assess risks, their likelihood and potential impact
  • Produce, regularly review and test emergency plans and response strategies

The CPLRF is made up of:

  • Category 1 responders such as the NHS, Environment Agency, local authorities and 'blue light' emergency services
  • Category 2 responders such as the Met Office, Health and Safety Executive, National Highways, utility companies and transport companies

You can find out more about the work of the CPLRF and the organisations within it on the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Prepared website.

How to prepare your household, business and community for different emergencies

Being prepared and knowing what to do in an emergency can limit its impact on you, your family, your business and your community. The more people are prepared, the easier it is to recover.
