Alcohol Awareness Week (6-12 July) is a chance to pause and think about how alcohol fits into our lives – and the impact it can have on our health, relationships and communities.

For many of us, alcohol plays a role in socialising or unwinding. But it can easily creep up on us. What starts as “just a few” can become more frequent or more than we realise. This year’s theme encourages us to step back, reflect honestly, and look out for one another.

Why it matters

Alcohol affects both physical and mental health. Regularly drinking above recommended limits increases the risk of liver disease, heart conditions and some cancers. It can also affect sleep, mood, anxiety and stress.

Beyond health, alcohol can impact relationships, work, finances and parenting. For some people, cutting back becomes difficult without support – and that’s nothing to feel ashamed of.

Know your drinking

Taking a moment to reflect can be helpful. Ask yourself:

  • How often am I drinking?
  • How much do I typically have?
  • Am I drinking more than I used to?
  • Have I felt I should cut down?

UK guidelines recommend no more than 14 units a week, spread over several days, with some alcohol‑free days. Many people are surprised when they check what 14 units actually looks like.

Small changes can make a big difference

You don’t need to make big changes overnight. Small, manageable steps can help:

  • Have a few alcohol‑free days each week
  • Choose lower‑strength or alcohol‑free options
  • Set a limit before you start drinking
  • Alternate alcoholic drinks with water or soft drinks
  • Avoid using alcohol to cope with stress

Even simple changes can improve how you feel day to day.

Look out for each other

A key message this year is connection. Checking in with friends, family or neighbours can make a real difference. If someone seems to be struggling, a simple “How are you?” can open the door to support.
