Work to refurbish the changing rooms at a popular leisure facility in Peterborough is to be carried out, after Cabinet members approved plans.

Proposals which will see improvements made to the changing rooms at Vivacity Premier Fitness in Hampton were given the green light by members yesterday. The venue’s air handling unit will also be replaced as part of the work, resolving operational issues with the existing system and helping to improve the overall quality and resilience of the facilities.

A capital budget of £800,000 has been set aside for construction works and members also agreed additional revenue funding of £250,000 to provide temporary changing facilities, ensuring that the swimming pool can continued to be used during the work.

The project is expected to take around 12 weeks and be completed by April 2027. Designs for the temporary changing units are still being finalised and the council will make further announcements in due course.

Councillor Zameer Ali, Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Safety, said: “We are fully committed to providing and maintaining high quality leisure facilities in Peterborough and this work will ensure that one of the city’s most popular venues can continue to be enjoyed by families for years to come.

“If we didn’t act now then there is a risk that the facility could deteriorate in the near future, so we are taking appropriate action at the right time. By providing temporary changing facilities we are also ensuring that disruption is kept to a minimum and the venue’s swimming pool can still be used throughout.”

The work is being carried out following a validation survey of the venue’s existing changing room heating, ventilation and cooling systems in April 2025. This followed concerns raised about increased levels of condensation in the changing rooms.

The investigation concluded that the current system was past its operational life span and a replacement system was needed to resolve the issues. A recommendation was provided to replace the system as part of the council’s planned capital programme scheduled for 2026.

The works required the venue’s changing rooms to be replaced and reconfigured, with the project providing a perfect opportunity to undertake a wider changing room refurbishment, ensuring that the facilities remain of high quality.
